I can remember early in my career I kept doing the work but nothing was happening. But as I kept staying consistent, eventually I was rewarded with some of the best numbers my company had ever seen.

You see, these limits aren’t always as solid as they seem. Often, the barriers we face are more psychological than physical, constructed from our frustration and doubts.

Pushing past these self-imposed boundaries is not only possible but can lead to achievement. I’ll walk you through practical strategies for how to push past your limits and unlock your true potential.

Is it possible to push past your limits?

The concept of pushing past your limits is about surpassing what you previously thought was your maximum capacity. Breaking through your limits requires self-discipline, perseverance and a willingness to accept failure. Through consistency, you can redefine what you once believed to be unachievable.

What causes us to lose motivation?

Burnout, lack of clear goals and fear of failure are some of the reasons we may lose motivation. When the gap between where you are and where you want to be seems long, it’s easy to lose sight of your purpose.

Additionally, distractions and negativity can disrupt progress and diminish your enthusiasm. But you have to reestablish a sense of purpose and maintain your energy to move towards success.

How to Push Past Your Limits

1. Visualize Your Success Beyond the Barrier

Visualization is a tool that top athletes have used to prepare for challenges. It involves creating a detailed mental image of yourself achieving your goal. It’s a focused practice of seeing, feeling, and believing in a future outcome.

There’s science behind this too. Researchers found that a group that incorporated mental training improved their muscle strength.

There’s a whole bunch of other beliefs about visualization prompting your mind to recognize opportunities for success. While the science on that may be debatable, I’ll just say for myself, I at least feel better when I do it.

2. Set Small, Achievable Goals

If you try to breakdown a wall with one powerful swing, you’re going to get tired and discouraged fast. But you choose to chip away at it little by little, eventually you can breakthrough.

When I got more muscular in my 20’s, I didn’t do it by trying to lift the biggest weight around. I lift smaller weights, and gradually increased the weight that I lifted. Eventually, I got more muscular than I’d ever been in my life.

Breakdown the big limit you’re trying to surpass into smaller, manageable steps. This strategy makes the overall objective seem less daunting.

Each small victory you achieve serves as a motivator. You can feel good with each step you make.

By focusing on one small goal at a time, you can build momentum that can carry you forward. It’s a practical way to develop the discipline and resilience needed for long-term success.

3. Embrace Discomfort

One of the important life lessons you should remember is embracing discomfort. Most people naturally shy away from discomfort. But feeling uncomfortable is a necessary part of the process.

I didn’t always feel like getting up to workout or working on my blog. But it’s when you do the work anyway, you can keep moving forward towards success.

There are thousands and millions of other people who experience discomfort and quit. They decide, well since I don’t feel like it, I’ll just do nothing. But you can either not do what you feel like and eventually be able to do whatever you want, or just stay stuck where you are.

4. Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Your mindset plays a role in how you perceive your limits. A fixed mindset assumes that your talents and abilities are unchangeable. This belief system makes you more likely to give up when faced with a challenge. You see it as proof of your inherent limitations.

But a growth mindset is the belief that your abilities can be developed through hard work. This perspective transforms challenges into opportunities for improvement. When you adopt a growth mindset, failure is just a part of learning.

Focus on the effort you put in rather than just the outcome. Celebrate progress, no matter how small. View feedback as a valuable tool for development. This outlook can empower you to persevere through setbacks.

5. Implement a Structured Routine

Motivation alone is an unreliable strategy for achieving difficult goals. Remember, sometimes we don’t feel like doing something despite all the motivation we try to drum up.

A structured routine is about creating habits that keep you moving forward even when you don’t feel like it. It gives you the framework for consistent action.

Establish a clear schedule for the tasks related to your goal. This can reduce the mental fatigue of decision making and make it easier to stick to your plan no matter how you feel. Your routine becomes an automatic process that directs your behavior and leads you toward your objective.

It just takes a little bit of time everyday to build up to something amazing. This disciplined approach can help give you much greater results than sporadic bursts of intense effort.

6. Find a Mentor

In certain types of therapy, they incorporate peer support. It involves having someone provide advice and guidance based on their similar experience.

In the same way, a mentor can offer encouragement when you feel like giving up. They can see your potential and help you identify blind spots you might not recognize.

They can also provide a fresh perspective and suggest alternative strategies you may not have considered. As a result, you avoid mistakes and save time.

Look for someone who has achieved what you want to accomplish. Perhaps they might be willing to invest in your growth. This relationship can provide the support you need to stay on track. You’ll have someone whose a living embodiment of what’s possible, which can inspire you even further.

7. Use Positive Self-Talk

I always keep the belief in my mind that things are going to work out. I may not know how or when, but I just maintain that confidence in that belief. It keeps me looking for that one opportunity that’s going to get me where I want to be.

Make it habit to push back against the doubt and criticism in your mind. Replace those negative thoughts with positive and encouraging ones.

This practice, known as positive self-talk, can help you build self-confidence and resilience. It’s about becoming your own cheerleader instead of your own worst critic.

8. Reflect on Your Progress

When you’re focused on a long-term goal, it’s easy to lose sight of your progress. Taking the time to regularly reflect on it is important for maintaining motivation. It allows you to appreciate your efforts and see evidence of your growth.

You can keep a journal or log to track your journey. Jot down the small victories and milestones along the way. Looking back at this record during moments of doubt can be a much-needed confidence boost. You’ll be reminded that your hard work is paying off.

9. Learn from Failure

Failure is unavoidable. The fear of it can prevent people from even attempting to push their boundaries.

But every time you fall short, you have an opportunity to learn and adjust your approach. Analyze what went wrong, identify the lessons, and use it to inform your next attempt.

Shifting your perspective from fearing failure to embracing it decreases it’s power over you. It frees you to take risks and try new strategies.

10. Prioritize Rest and Recovery

The drive to go beyond your limits can sometimes lead to the mistaken belief that you have to never stop working. But rest and recovery are needed to maintain consistent high performance.

Let your body and mind repair and adapt to the stress you place on them. Get adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and time away from your work. It can help rejuvenate your energy and return to your work with renewed focus.

The limits you perceive today are just milestones on a longer journey of growth. Applying these tips can help you begin to dismantle these barriers and discover. Your journey can be a continuous cycle of reaching a limit, pushing through it, and acheiving a new benchmark of success.
