Princess Polly was founded in Australia in 2005 and then started selling online in 2010. The reputable news sources that refer to Princess Polly as fast fashion include:
The reason is that, like other fast fashion brands, Princess Polly offers lots of cheap new clothes. As Bloomberg reports, only a fraction of all new clothes made ever get recycled.
Boston University notes that 34 billion pounds of used textiles get thrown out every year. It’s important to ask what Princess Polly is doing to be more sustainable.
Are They Sustainable?
The company notes that 20% of all its products are made of lower-impact materials. The materials they listed included:
- Organic materials
- Recycled materials
- Water based materials
- Forest friendly materials
Their plan is to have 60% percent of their products sustainably made by 2025 and, by 2030, 100%. These lofty goals would be a step in the right direction.
They also state that they work closely with their factories to produce small quantities of products based on customer demand.
Princess Polly goes on to list other things they’re doing, such as only using 1% of animal materials to produce their products and offering a care guide to help consumers make their clothes last longer.
Most other sources evaluating this company recognize they make some effort to be more sustainable. But it’s still concluded that Princess Polly can do more.
Some of what critics say the company has to do more of include:
- Providing evidence of carbon and greenhouse gas reduction in its supply chain, minimizing textile waste, and reduction of hazardous chemicals.
- Not doing its final stage of production in countries that have a high risk of labor abuse.
Is Princess Polly like Shein?
While Princess Polly is guilty of some of the fast fashion tactics Shein uses, Shein sells their new clothing at much cheaper prices.
Shein also has more of a bad reputation for practicing fast fashion. Nonetheless, both Shein and Princess Polly have a lot of work to do to be more sustainable and help protect the environment.
