Best Eco-Friendly Electric Toothbrushes
Electric toothbrushes were used by 131 million Americans in 2020, according to Statista. Full disclosure, even I use an electric toothbrush now. But as we become more environmentally conscious, it’s fair to wonder how eco-friendly they are.
Are Electric Toothbrushes Eco-Friendly And Sustainable?

Most electric toothbrushes are made of plastic and rubber. As many of you already know, plastic is very harmful to our planet. Electric toothbrushes are also powered by AA batteries.
These types of batteries harm our environment too. The chemicals from them contaminate our surface and groundwater.
Research from Trinity College Dublin concluded that electric toothbrushes are harmful to the planet. To be truthful, our other list of eco-friendly toothbrushes is currently better for the environment.
Having said that, as sustainability becomes more important to consumers, companies are changing their products. We’ve put together a list of eco-friendly electric toothbrushes you can try using. We can all take one step forward in making our planet a cleaner place.
1. FOREO ISSA 2 Silicone Brush
As the name points out, The FOREO ISSA 2 Brush is made of silicone. This material is more durable and better for the environment than plastic.
The main problem with toothbrushes is people throwing them away. In the US alone, one billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away each year.
The FOREO ISSA 2 has one-year battery life. Given that this brush lasts longer, you won’t be throwing it away anytime soon. Other benefits you might appreciate are its adjustable intensity settings and ergonomic design.
2. PearlBar Bamboo Electric Toothbrush
The PearlBar Electric Toothbrush has three biodegradable bamboo brush heads. The bamboo heads can biodegrade in a matter of months in a compost bin. Plastic, on the other hand, takes about 450 years to decompose in landfills.
PearlBar also notes that they ship their product in biodegradable packaging. You’ll also appreciate it has a built-in smart timer and easy-to-read mode indicator lights.
3. Quip Electric Toothbrush
Quip uses recyclable packaging to ship their electric toothbrushes. The toothbrush also only has to be recharged four times a year.
That’s less electricity use, which means less greenhouse gas caused by power plants. Quip also offers rechargeable batteries for their toothbrushes, which helps prevent them from ending up in our soil.
4. Sustainable Tomorrow Bamboo Electric Toothbrush
Like PearlBar, the Sustainable Tomorrow toothbrush is also made of bamboo. Every part of it is recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable.
They offer a one year’s supply of replaceable heads, and the toothbrush battery lasts up to a month. The electric toothbrush only needs to be charged for 4 hours. Sustainable Tomorrow also delivers its product in zero-waste packaging.
5. Goodwell Be. Brush
In 2022, Goodwell is introducing its Beyond Electric toothbrush. The product requires no cords and no batteries, reducing e-waste.
The brush heads are also the smallest on the market, helping to reduce more waste. The Beyond Electric Toothbrush will be made with stainless steel.
At the end of its life, it can be reclaimed and repurposed for another use. Lastly, Goodwell has a Take-Back program that ensures the brush heads are broken down in a recyclable way.
6. Georganics Sonic Electric Toothbrush
The packaging Georganics uses for their electric toothbrush is both recyclable and compostable. The plastic heads of the toothbrush are also recyclable. Georganics notes that their toothbrushes have long battery life, giving you a long-lasting device.
As we mentioned earlier, electric toothbrushes are not the most eco-friendly toothbrush option. The change to more sustainable practices is just getting started with these products. In the future, hopefully, more companies will create electric toothbrushes with sustainable materials and packaging.
