Solgaard’s Lifepack Backpack is solar-powered. They use their own fabric made of upcycled ocean plastic to create the item. It features a USB port, water-resistant bottom, and drop-proof laptop storage.

Most of their employees work remotely. There’s not much information available on their labor practices. One thing we do know is that they’ve saved over 40,000,000 plastic bottles from entering the ocean.

2. 8000Kicks

8000Kicks is unique in that they make their backpacks out of waterproof hemp. It can fit a 15-inch laptop, has an embedded USB plug, and is PFC-free.

The company also sells hemp shoes, socks, and dog toys. A majority of sources conclude that 8000Kicks uses ethical factories where the workers are treated fairly.

3. Patagonia

Most of Patagonia’s backpacks are made of at least some recycled materials. They pay workers in some of the final stages of production a living wage.

The company is also a member of 1% for the Planet. That means they donate 1% of sales towards the restoration and preservation of the natural environment.

4. United By Blue

Like other brands on this list, United By Blue uses recycled materials to make their backpacks. Their products are made in different types of factories, including OCS, GOTS, and Fair-trade certified.

5. Opus Mind

Opus Mind makes their backpacks out of recycled leather. The mission of the company is to inspire consumers to make more sustainable choices. The backpacks are all handmade in Italy.
