What is Cupro Fabric?
Cupro fabric is a combination of three types of fabric; plant-based, synthetic, and animal-derived. Usually, fabrics are made via one of these methods.
Cupro is made from recycled plant-based fibers and then processed with chemicals used in synthetic fabrics. The final product is almost a mirror image of silk.
What is cupro fabric?
The main material in cupro fabric is regenerated cellulosic fibers. During cotton production, long fibers are pulled from the seeds. These seeds are called linter.
Linter fibers are short, fuzzy, and minuscule. They are often disregarded when the cotton is ginned.
Ginning separates the cotton fibers from the seeds; in the process, cotton linters are destroyed. Cupro uses these tiny linter fibers instead of them merely going to waste.
Is cupro a good fabric?
The good things about cupro are that it’s low-cost, soft, and lightweight. For those in the clothing industry, it’s an easy material to manufacture and create.

Is Cupro natural or synthetic?
Cupro is semi-synthetic. It’s derived from a natural source, but it’s mixed with synthetic chemicals.
Is Cupro toxic to wear?
Because it’s made of chemicals, sources say it’s a toxic fabric.
The linter is transformed in a cuprammonium solution. This is a mixture of copper and ammonium that hardens the linter.
Copper and ammonium with the cellulose to make a new substance (cupro), and then the mixture is dropped into caustic soda and then fed through a spinneret. From here, the fabric is soaked in baths, known as cuprammonium rayon baths, that remove the copper and ammonium from the material.
After this has concluded, the cupro is ready to be made into clothes. At its most basic, cupro is a recycled plant-based, chemically manufactured fabric.
It’s important to note that when not disposed of correctly, the cuprammonium solution can be very harmful. While it can be reused a number of times, it does eventually need to be thrown away.
Unfortunately, many manufacturers are not as vigilant or as careful as they should be with the disposal of cuprammonium solution.
Is Cupro Fabric Sustainable?
Cupro is somewhat sustainable for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it uses recycled materials. For centuries cotton linter has been disregarded and wasted.
Cupro uses every single part of the cotton plant, which reduces waste and maximizes resourcefulness. Cotton production and farming is an intense, labor-intensive process.
It uses extraordinary amounts of water, machinery, pesticides, and materials. Utilizing every part of cotton makes this whole process more eco-friendly. Sustainability is all about wasting less and recycling more!
Secondly, cupro is an alternative to silk. Cupro has a very similar lightweight, soft, silky smooth feeling. Unlike silk, cupro is not made from animal-derived ingredients.
The production of silk is brutal and unforgiving. Fibers are harvested from cocoons boiled in hot water while the silkworms are still inside.
This concoction is stirred until the cocoons entirely unravel and the silk is revealed. On average, 3,000 silkworms are killed for a single pound of silk.
Nonetheless, as mentioned earlier, it is toxic to wear. Sustainability is about not only not harming the planet but not harming ourselves either.
How is Cupro Used in Clothes?
Cupro is mostly used for dresses, blouses, and scarves. Because of the silk-like texture, the fabric is used for similar garments as silk. But given the toxicity of the fabric, it’s best to avoid it for safer alternatives.
