Many companies today are in the habit of greenwashing. They slap their products with the words sustainable, green, or eco-friendly, and make people believe they’re helping the environment.
But fortunately, it’s possible to learn what makes something environmentally friendly. Here are some tips to know whether a product is eco-friendly or not.
The meaning of eco-friendly
In one of our previous articles, we answered the question, “What does eco-friendly mean?” The word is basically a description that means something is not harmful to the environment.
To know that something is eco-friendly requires people to know what doesn’t harm the environment and what does. As everyone learns more in their journey of being more sustainable, they can make wiser choices in their purchases. Keep the following things in mind when figuring out whether a product is eco-friendly.
1. Natural materials or ingredients
One indication of an eco-friendly product is if it’s made with natural materials. Look on the label to see if the descriptions specify the item is made with bamboo or organic material. Items described as being made with recycled materials are acceptable as well. Take time to learn this list of eco-friendly materials.

2. Learn if the product is durable
Look up reviews on the item to see if people note whether it lasts a long time. The longer a product can be used, the less chances it’ll end up as waste.
Examples of durable products are reusable water bottles and reusable grocery bags. Even once an item is no longer useable the way it was intended, it’s good to consider how to repurpose it.
3. Eco-friendly production
Read if a company makes use of sustainable energy sources such as solar or wind power. Find out if they reduce the amount of water and electricity they use to create their products.
4. Recyclable
A product being recyclable is another means in which it doesn’t end up as waste. Consumers should research if it’s possible to recycle the item they’re about to purchase.
