Why Water Conservation Is Important
Water conservation is important because it helps our water stay clean and pure and also protects the environment. It’s important for society to use water in a responsible manner.
There are many strategies to protect our water. Some of the best strategies are:
- Improving management of water
- Reducing waste
- Prevent damage of water quality
There are many reasons why conserving water is necessary for our world. Here are some of the top benefits we gain from saving our water.

1. Growing food
A lot of the food we eat requires water in order to grow. In particular, our fruits and vegetables need it.
Even if you mainly eat meat, the livestock you eat needed water o drink in order to grow. Needless to say, if we run out of water, that means we’ll potentially run out of food too.
2. Reducing effect of drought
Population growth is causing an increasing demand for freshwater sources. Conserving our water helps to protect us against the years we experience drought. Here are a few ways to save water before a drought occurs.
- Avoid pouring water down the drain and find another way to use it. An example is watering your garden.
- Check your plumbing to make sure there’s any leaks
- Fix any dripping faucets
3. It keeps water available for recreation
We use water for more than just survival. We also enjoy it for many other activities such as golfing and swimming.
We also use our freshwater for watering lawns or washing our cars. Conserving our water allows us to continue to do these things.
4. Saving energy
The equipment used to pump the water we need takes a lot of energy. In California, for example, 7% of the energy used is for transferring water. The less energy used, the less carbon in our environment.
5. Maintaining our services
From fire departments to hospitals, many of the services in our community require water. Saving water ensures we’ll continue to have them for the times they’re needed.
